The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Gafilo churning in the waters northwest of Madagascar on March 6, 2004. Being unusually large and intense, Gafilo was the deadliest and most destructive cyclone of the 2003–04 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season, with damages in Madagascar costing about US$250M (~$340M in 2019 USD) and killing at least 363 people. Gafilo was classified as a Very Intense Tropical Cyclone on the SWIO scale (Category 5 on SSHWS, Super Typhoon on JTWC scale). The right of the image is north.
